Rainforest facts
We are losing Earth's greatest biological treasures just as we are begining to appreciate their true value. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.
About one and a half acres of rainforest are being destroyed every second.
Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microorganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next quarter century due to rainforest deforestation.
Rainforests could possibly hold the cure for cancer !! Sadly as the rainforests are destroyed so too are the plants that may hold the key to these medical miracles. Two medications that have been made from a plant called Madagascar periwinkle, which is now extinct because of deforestation, has increased the chance of survival from 20% to 80% in children with Leukemia.
Whilst the rainforests are being destroyed we have no idea what this may do to the world's weather patterns
Around 80% of what we eat originated in a rainforest. Just think without rainforest's we would have not have discovered chocolate !!!!!
Rainforest diversity is so concentrated that one pond in the Amazon can have more types of fish than all the rivers in Europe.
